This is a story about men, a way of life and justice on the open range in the 1880.

These are four men from four different generations.  They have in common a love of the open range and free ranging cattle to market. Each one has a different story and each one is a friend to the death.

Charley Waite (Kevin Costner) a former hired gun who has hooked up with Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) for the past ten years. The two have become friends with respect and a love of wide open spaces each one having a different reason.

Mose (Abraham Benrubi) a giant of a man that he explains that Boss didn't want him on the free range drive he was too big to drive the cattle and a little afraid that he would eat to much.  Charley put in a good word for Mose saying he thought he would work out fine as the cook on the drive.

Button (Diego Luna) a boy a teenager that has a tendency to want to play then do work of a cattle drive, but Charley and Boss found him eating garbarge out of a garbarge pile behind a cafe in Texas they hired him on even though he didn't know any English at the time.  He is now 16 years old and acts like it most of the time eager to please and still too young to actually accomplished it in style or grace.
